Curriculum
Boston Nursery School’s curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn what they need to know, and be able to do, in order to connect with, and thrive in the world in which they live. It is play-based, child centred and experiential. We use carefully chosen children’s literature to drive our teaching and learning. This is because global research overwhelmingly shows that when children are immersed in rich language, imagination and information provided through the regular sharing of books with trusted adults, they also go on to achieve the best outcomes across their education. These positive outcomes also typically continue into adulthood. Our curriculum sets learning outcomes based on the new EYFS, and is tailored to the particular needs of the children attending our setting, as outlined in our curriculum Intent.
Working collaboratively with other Lincolnshire Maintained Nursery School Federation, we have created a curriculum which is sequenced into four progressive stages of learning and development, and is designed to be flexible enough for practitioners to plan children’s learning from individual starting points regardless of when a child starts at our nursery school.
Termly overviews show how we plan to ensure children move through our progressive curriculum however these are adapted to meet the needs of the current cohort. Staff engage in professional dialogue and reflective practice to meet children’s individual needs, assess outcomes, and plan next steps.
We highlight Makaton signs and key vocabulary, as it is our intent to provide children with the English language skills they need to understand and communicate effectively with others. As many of our children have additional communication and language needs, or have English as an additional language (EAL) this is a key focus of our curriculum and provision.
Our curriculum is designed to target an intent of school readiness for the children in our local area, as outlined below:
INTENT – School Readiness
The curriculum at Boston Nursery School has been designed to equip our children with the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for primary school. Many of our children are socially disadvantaged. By providing key skills and knowledge in the prime areas our children will be better placed to take advantage of the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences available to them when they begin primary school. We carefully identify their learning needs and provide a robust and proven curriculum that provides children with the opportunity to discover more, learn more, remember more, and achieve more.
